Why the US takes pledge to protect Taiwan even though China is growing stronger and stronger?

China is growing stronger and stronger and the US seems to be relatively on the wane. If so, then why US has pledged again and again that it will protect Taiwan? What if it didn't have sufficient power to do so? i only ask this question only to know why, not for nationalistic reasons.
